By Antonio Davinci

It is easy to find a Sacramento concert to attend, as there are many performance venues in the city. You can attend a concert at an amphitheater, arena, stadium, theater, or club. A very large venue that tends to have the largest concerts and most famous acts is the Arco Arena. Besides concerts the Arco arena books sporting events, the circus, cage fighting and much more. Tickets for these events can be purchased directly form the Arena.

Smaller acts that tend to be more indie in nature take place at the Crest Theater. This smaller more intimate setting can be a great choice for jazz, folk music and acoustic performances. Mainly large performing acts tend to be at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. A lot of Sacramento concerts occur here though popular plays are also fit into the concert schedule.

It is very easy to experience the Sacramento concert scene as there is a lot going on. There are hundreds of concerts performed each year spaced out over the span of the entire year. It is possible to attend concerts by both internationally acclaimed artists as well as local performers. Certain venues cater to specific age groups such as the Empire Events Center having concerts for younger individuals.

There are many Sacramento Community concerts each year. This concert series strove to bring music to a wider audience and take place at the Sacramento Community Theater. It is possible to get discounted tickets by purchasing a subscription to the entire season. Interestingly enough there are no reserved seats and the group experiences up to 90% renewal on subscriptions. They have done a wonderful job keeping costs down while bringing in excellent performers.

There are many volunteer bands that perform in the area such as the Sacramento community band and the Sacramento symphonic winds. These bands are purely voluntary and many of the performers are retired professionals from San Francisco, so the quality of music is excellent. If you are a musician then you will have no problem finding a group that will play any style of music.

In the 50's the Sacramento Community Concert Association was formed and has been planning concerts to this day. Information on current and upcoming performances throughout the city can be found by visiting the venue websites or by contacting the Chamber of Commerce. You will not have a problem finding a concert to attend and with such a variety of styles available you may be able to expand your repertoire. No matter the season you will have a great time. - 18424

Michael Jackson -- Entertainer to the End

By James Ziebarth

After August 29, 1958, Gary Indiana would never be the same. Michael Jackson was born to Joseph and Katherine Jackson. a couple could not be so different. Katherine was a God fearing Jehovah's witness. Joseph was a laborer who dabbled The Falcons. The Falcons was a R&B. Michael Jackson came into this world quietly. He would not leave the same way.

Joseph saw his chance for success through his kids. He started a group with Michael's older brothers. In 1964, Michael Jackson joined the performing team as a backup singer and performer. He would quickly be promoted to lead singer. After his promotion, the band was dubbed The Jackson Five.

Michael Jackson was not destined to be in a group. Even though the Jackson Five found celebrity, he was destined to be a solo performer. In the late 1970s, Michael struck out on his own. By 1982, Michael Jackson was releasing his second solo album. Thriller became the most successful album of all times. Thriller stayed on Billboards top 200 for 80 consecutive weeks. RIAA certified Thriller for 28 million shipments, earning Thriller Double Diamond status. Worldwide, Thriller sold between 47 million and 109 million copies.

Jacko was not content to only be a singer. In 1988, he added the title of writer to his arsenal. He released his first autobiography, Moon Walk. Moon Walk took him four years to complete. The book sold over 200,000 copies.

Jacko's fame made him a very rich man. Between 1984 and 1985, he purchased the rights to the Beatles music for $47.5 million. This year was not without its problems. While filming a Pepsi commercial, his scalp was burned.

Title of singer was not enough for Michael Jackson. He released his first book, Moon Walk, in 1988. Moon Walk was an autobiography that took Jacko four years to write. Over 200,000 people purchased the book.

Jacko began the Neverland Ranch in 1988. Near Santa Ynez, California, he purchased real estate. He then spent a total of $17 million to install a Ferris wheel, movie theatre, and zoo. Jacko also proved that he was very concerned with security by hiring 40 security officers. Talk about appreciation, a 2003 appraisal estimated the value at $100 million.

Hoping for true love and a second attempt at a long lasting marriage, Jackson would remarry on November 14, 1996. The bride would be identified at Deborah Rowe, Michael's dermatology nurse. Together they would have 2 children. A boy and a girl. Michel Joseph Jackson a.k.a. Prince Michael Jackson, and Paris Katherine Michael Jackson. In only 3 short years the couple would call it quits and Deborah Rowe would give full custody right of the children over to their father Michael.

In 2002, Michael Jackson's third child would be born. Prince Michael Jackson II. The mother's identity was never released by Jackson, but he would say that the child was the result of an artificial insemination from a surrogate mother and his own sperm cells.

In 2003, Jacko was once more accused of child molestation by then 13 year old Gavin Arvizo. Jackson would be charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent to a minor.. Jackson would deny all allegations.

His trial, People vs. Jackson, would officially begin on January 31, 2005 and would last for a period of only 5 months. The trial ended with Jackson being acquitted on all counts.

Prior to his death in 2009, Jacko was in the process of a "Come Back" show. It was scheduled to take place at London's O2 arena and had sold tickets for an astounding 50 sold out concerts. They were to officially begin on July 13, 2009, with the last show taking place on March 6,2010. The ticket sales had already broken numerous records, according to Jackson's website.

On June 25,2009, Michael Jackson would collapse at his rented mansion in Los Angeles. All attempts at rescuing him by his personal physician would be unsuccessful. Los Angeles Paramedics would receive a call at 12:22 p.m (PDT), and would arrive three minutes later at Jacko's residence. According to sources on the scene, Jackson was not breathing and CPR was administered. The CPR would continue for an hour while en route to a local Los Angeles hospital, where Jackson would be pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. local time.

His memorial would be held on July7, 2009, at the Staples Center in Los Angles. His casket was present at the memorial, which was broadcast live all around the world and watched by up to one billion people, but no information would be released about the final resting place of Michael Jackson's body. RIP Michael "King of Pop" Jackson. - 18424

Sinatra Swings To A Bossa Nova Beat

By David Glisan

Frank Sinatra is often dismissed as a mere 'pop' singer and critically diminished relative to his contemporaries. He's often accused of being formulaic and repetitive and not afforded the proper respect for his vocal talent. While Sinatra certainly knew what worked for him, and what kind of songs and arrangements he liked, the assertion that he didn't have the vocal 'chops' is patently unfair. Perhaps the finest example of his vocal excellence is his work with Brazilian guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Jobim is considered the founding father of Bossa Nova, and certainly deserves a bulk of the credit for popularizing the genre in North America. His collaboration with Sinatra on a samba tinged album Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim was a critical and commerical success. Sinatra had the highest respect for Jobim as an artist and liked him as a friend. He would try to work out the logistics for the two to record together at several points in his career, but it never came to pass.

"Wave", written by Jobim and arranged by Eumir Deodato, is arguably the best of all of the Sinatra/Jobim collaborations. It features some great singing by Sinatra, including perhaps the lowest notes ever recorded by "The Voice". Years later, during his periods of 'retirement' it is said that Sinatra would listen to "Wave" just to hear how good he sounds hitting the bass notes.

This song originally intended as the opening track of a second volume of Sinatra/Jobim collaborations, but it was never released as such. The story that has circulated over the years is that the Sinatra/Jobim album put on the back burner so that Reprise could release the concept album "Watertown" instead. As an commercial decision, it's tough to fathom the rationale if this is the case. "Watertown" sold fewer copies than any other Sinatra release on Reprise. Another story is that Sinatra himself nixed the release because he hated the cover art which featured the 'King of Swingers' wearing a windbreaker and standing in front of a Greyhound bus. Hard to blame him for disliking that image if this version of the story is true.

"Wave", along with the majority of the songs intended for the "Sinatra/Jobim" album finally surfaced on "Sinatra and Company" in 1970. The "b" side is some of Sinatra's ill-fated attempts to cover popular songs of the day ("Close To You", It's Not Easy Being Green", "Leaving On A Jet Plane"). These are recordings that even the most devoted Sinatra-philes collect for the sake of completing a collection only, and a stark contrast to the masterful work with Jobim on the album's "A" side. "Wave" also appeared on the Reprise box set and of course of the "Complete Reprise Recordings" suitcase collection.

Critic Will Friedwald, who may have written more about Sinatra's body of work than anyone, praised his recordings with Jobim as having a "flexibility and delicacy, as if they could be blown about by a soft Brazilian breeze". In any case, the Sinatra/Jobim sessions certainly rank among the finest vocal work of Sinatra's amazing career. - 18424
