A common misconception when seeking a piano instructor is that if a person can play proficiently, then they can also teach piano to students as well. However, this is not always the case! Many people can play the piano but not all of them have the patience and necessary people skills to be a good teacher. In fact, more often than not, accomplished piano players do not have that patience or teaching skills.

Most experienced pianists struggle to return to the basics long enough to teach them to someone else. They feel as though theyve worked hard to be able to play at their current level and find little pleasure in reliving their beginnings as a novice musician. Unfortunately some pianists that feel this way are not aware of it until they are already hired as an instructor and are trying desperately to conclude their first few private lessons. When you are looking to hire a piano teacher whether for yourself or for a member of your family it is important to remember to consider both the individuals experience as a pianist and as an instructor.

References from past students are important; ask for their phone numbers so you can speak with them personally. Ask the students about their level of accomplishment such as what level they started at and what level they accomplished before discontinuing their lessons.
