Who Are The Greatest Actors

By Brenda Wright

It's fun to trade opinions on favorite movies and favorite actors. Everybody has an opinion and none is more right or wrong but everyone has their own favorites that they get pleasure from. Some actors astound us with their enormous talent, some actors are pretty to look at and then of course some are both of those things. At times we admire an actor more for what he does away from the movie set as for what they do onscreen since some actors are just remarkable people who use their fame and fortune to help others who are less fortunate throughout the world.

Tom Hanks is a extraordinary talent. It's is rather surprising to think that he got his start on a small and kooky TV show called "Bosom Buddies. Later he pulled off such great roles as Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer who is infected with the AIDS virus and is fired from his conservative law firm because of the fear that they might also contract the disease. His first Academy Award was from that role back in 1993.

Tom Hanks is only the second actor ever to win back-to-back Academy Awards as he once more took home the Oscar the next year 1994 for his moving portrayal of Forrest Gump. The only other actor to do that was Spencer Tracy in 1937 and 1938. Tom has also entertained us with other wonderful movies but the list is too long to cover.

Brad Pitt has been adored for his good looks ever since he charmed us in the 1991 film "Thelma and Louise". Nevertheless he hasn't always played the pretty boy roles. Recall "Seven" and "Twelve Monkeys" both from 1995? Sometimes his private life seems to overshadow his acting roles but the most impressive thing about Brad Pitt is that he has been especially active in humanitarian causes throughout the world and he has donated hefty sums of his cash to these causes.

Brad Pitt founded the "Make It Right Foundation" to aid the people of New Orleans following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The idea was to be a catalyst for the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans by building homes that were reasonably priced, sustainable and true to the culture of New Orleans. The goal was to finish it quickly so that the residents could return as soon as possible. Here is where he has had true triumph.

Which reminds me of one more great actor who we lost just this past year. Paul Newman passed away on September 26, 2008. During his life he entertained us with many great movies including the "Road to Perdition" in 2002, "The Color Of Money" from 1986 and "Absence of Malice" from 1981. He also had the leading role in the well-known favorite "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" from clear back in 1969. Certainly, he was also in many other wonderful movies, too.

Nevertheless we also remember him for his charity. In 1982 he created a line of food products called "Newman's Own". It began with a salad dressing and then expanded to include pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, cookies, salsa and more. He established a policy that all of the income generated from Newman's Own, after taxes of course, would be donated to charity. As of 2006, the company had donated in excess of $250 million.

Movies are pleasurable and they entertain us and we will forever have our favorite actors and actresses along with our favorite movies. They might be our favorites because of their talent or for other reasons. Nevertheless since it is now possible to download free movies instantly we won't have to miss any movie from any of our favorite actors. - 18424

Festival Celebrates Islay's Malt Whisky Heritage

By Rachel Wilson

The annual, week long Islay Festival of Malt and Music starts the last weekend in May. The small Island of Islay is famous around the world for its malt whiskies with no less than eight working distilleries. This makes the malt whisky industry one of the most important sources of income for the island.

The festival programme includes a variety of cultural and musical events including Highland dancing, the Islay Pipe Band, guided walks, sporting events and children's amusements. However I don't think anyone would argue that Islay's whisky will take pride of place. The malt whisky enthusiast will be able to visit each of the distilleries on their open days. On offer will be distillery tours, master classes and whisky tastings. Refreshments and food tastings featuring local produce and ingredients will be available at many of the events.

An Evening of Gaelic Song and Traditional Music at the Gaelic College Bowmore on the evening of 27th May will be a treat for those interested in Gaelic music and culture. This is a great opportunity to see local Islay artists, including the Islay Gaelic Choir, perform. There will be refreshments and a raffle.

A whisky tasting Ceilidh on the evening of the 25th May will challenge the real whisky buffs who can tell Ardbeg from Bowmore or Bruichladdich. All the distilleries will be there with their whisky so go along and test your whisky tasting skills. Musical accompaniment will be by The Islay Fiddle and Accordion Band.

Islay's peaty soil and brown peaty water combined with its exposed position all contribute to the unique characteristics of its whisky. Salty sea spray is brought far inland on wild winter gales, soaking deep into the peat. The same salty, seaweed scented breeze dries it out again in calmer weather conditions. The result is some of the strongest flavoured of all the malt whiskies.

The distilleries in the south of the island include Ardbeg and Laphroaig. These produce some of the most powerful of Islay's whiskies. The brown, peaty water is used together with a heavily peated malt in the distilling process. The whisky has a flavour that has been described as peat smoke, brine and iodine. Sometimes even "medicinal".

The distilleries to the north of Islay include Bruichladdich. They produce a much milder whisky. They don't use the brown peaty water but draw water from the springs before it has a chance to come into contact with the peat. A lightly peated malt is also favoured. The whisky produced is still dry but much lighter with mossy overtones rather that peaty and the flavours of the sea are not so pronounced.

Bowmore Distillery lies in the middle of the Island, on the shore of Loch Indaal. Its whisky also lies in between the characteristics of the North and South. It's peaty but not medicinal. The sea, salt and iodine flavours can be detected but are balanced by delicate floral notes with a peppery finish.

Islay is known as The Queen of the Hebrides and a visit offers much more than the festival. Try a taste of island life with stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. - 18424

Qualities you need to study the piano

By Lynn Lopez

You can never be too old to learn how to play the piano. It helps if you already own a piano or have ready access to one because buying a piano can be very expensive. You can always buy a used piano or even borrow from someone who is not using the instrument. In fact, since you are still a beginner at playing the piano, even a simple keyboard might be adequate for your purpose.

The next important thing is that you should be committed in learning how to play the piano. It takes time and persistence. You can not learn it overnight, nor can you learn it well by playing it from time to time. You need time to learn and to practice. You might have to schedule your practices around your other duties. Be patient with yourself.

If you have the budget for it, sign up for music lessons with a piano teacher in your area. Once again, choose the right piano teacher for you. If you choose wisely, you will be reaping great rewards from it. You can also check out nearby schools and colleges that offer piano lessons at a discounted cost. Remember that learning how to play the piano is not only limited on learning about the piano itself. You will also learn about music, note reading, chords, and other relevant theories.

When you are learning a new piece, keep in mind that you cannot learn the whole piece in one sitting. Therefore, try to break it down into manageable parts. Or you can learn with the right hand first, then the left hand, and finally play the piece with both hands. Playing the piano demands mastery of the piano pieces. Play slowly if you must. When it comes to piano playing, repetition yields mastery. Play the music over and over until you can play the entire piece perfectly.

Always warm up before you practice. Practice every day for at least thirty minutes or more. You practice to minimize or eliminate mistakes. Pay attention to your mistakes and try to avoid doing them again. You can, of course, take short breaks from piano playing. Remember that knowing how to play the piano, much like any skill depends on how often you practice. Do not shy away from difficult piano pieces, especially when your teacher believes you can handle it. Your progress literally lies in your own two hands. Be open to challenges. Your teacher would not give you a difficult piece if you cannot learn from it or if you are not up to it. With patience and time, you might be playing the piano for other people's entertainment soon! - 18424

Vocal Recording Essential Techniques

By Evan Shaffhauser

Are you about to lay down a new vocal track? Wait! Before you start wailing, there are a few basic things you should be aware of in order to get the cleanest and best sounding track possible. It is always possible to dirty up your vocals later and effects and so on, but starting with a clean vocal track is always a good practice.

Good mic technique basically means you need be aware of two things. Firstly, understanding that each microphones diaphragm reacts with varying sensitivities to all the subtle variations in your vocal delivery. Secondly, developing the skill of being able to adjust your body position according to the dynamics of your performance.

For intimate vocals that remain soft from start to finish, you can stay just a few inches from the mic for the duration of the performance. If you're going to belt it out, stand back a couple feet. If your performance uses a mixture of both, then you should start getting good at moving closer and further away from the mic as your delivery requires, even if its just for a couple words or a short phrase.

In a best case scenario, you should position your mouth just an inch or two from the mic, without overloading the levels. If this happens, two things can result. First, you will get digital clipping on your track. Two, you can temporarily shut down your mic in the middle of the performance. Both scenarios effectively ruin your recording, and both are easily avoidable. Just waste a bit of your vocals during loud bursts by pointing your mouth slightly to the side or slightly above the mic.

Be aware of mouth pops and lip noise. If you are using a a stage mic like a Shure SM57 or SM58, the its likely that the pop filter is built in. Stage mics usually have a foam insert just behind the ball shaped mesh protective grid. Studio mics on the other hand, usually have a foam sleeve that slips over the mic. Many musicians and engineers argue that the foam sleeves tend to kill high end frequencies and prefer the nylon O-ring pop-filters. Positioning on of these between the singer and the mic will stop intermittent blast of breath from overloading the mic.

Mouth noise can really make for a lot of clean up work afterward if you dont deal with it during the recording session. There is a surprisingly easy solution: drinking lots of water throughout the recording session will keep mouth noise WAY down. A few extra trips to the bathroom and no mouth noise Voila!

Now that youve got your clean, noise free vocal track, you are free to add reverb and effects as you please. Starting with the best engineered track means that when you do, you wont have to worry about weird artifacts showing up when you add effects, and hours spent in the studio doing clean up work. - 18424
