Metallica: 5 Important Songs

By Matt Mackenzie

My 5 different songs here are the songs that I believe opened Metallica up to a wider, more diverse audience. Metallica has had so many fans, from Germany to Canada, and these people probably discovered Metallica through one of these songs:

5 " Dyers Eve " - And Justice for All...

This is a super quick song that played to the thrash and speed metal fans. This song is so fast and intricate, Metallica has a hard time trying to play it now, like they did those 20 years ago. Though not often played live, it has been played a few times on select tours. This song, known for its speed, intense solos, and powerful chords, opened Metallica's first fans (heavy metal, thrash metal, and speed metal fans) up to Metallica's ability.

4 " Hero of the Day " - Load

One of Metallica's first slower paced songs. Though it picks up tempo in the middle, it was rejected at first by Metallica's fan-base for being too slow and rockish. The Load album was the first of Metallicas alternative rock experiment and many fans did not approve. However, many alternative rock fans found this song to be very good and it is now known as one of Metallica's most famous songs.

3 Until it Sleeps - Load

James delves into a new, more atheistic voice in this song. The song was written when James was dealing with troubling religious beliefs in his family. James mother had the belief that God would heal her life threatening illness, she died from not taking her life saving medication. James confronts the different viewpoints and deals with the conflicting arguments between science and religion. This song helped to get Metallica noticed by atheists and intellectuals who found the song to be an exciting take on the debate they were dealing with.

2 " No Leaf Clover " - S & M

Through the years leading up to Metallica's new S & M show with the San Fransisco Orchestra, James was jamming around, playing with a couple of riffs he hadn't found a song for. When S & M began recording, the band was rehearsing, and Metallica was accompanied by a large orchestra, James new guitar riffs found a place to live in No Leaf Clover. This song was created for the orchestra show in San Fransisco. It was instrumental in showing Metallica as not only beloved metal players, but as smart people who knew how to create exceptional songs.

1 "Master of Puppets" - Master of Puppets

The best Metallica song and best metal song by far. This song has it all and the album it is named after helped to skyrocket the group's success. Who wouldn't love the power chords, the masterful lyrics, or the slow, interesting middle section. The song topped the charts on the boards and the charts in the fans hearts. - 18424

History of The Blues in 400 Words

By Zack Roberts

The blues is a kind of music that can be vocal, instrumental (blues guitar) or both. It employs the 'blue' notes which are established on a 'minor pentatonic' scale most of the time, otherwise known as the blues scale.

Blues music was derived from the African-American communities in the U.S. out of job songs, spiritual songs, field hollers, chants, shouts and elementary ballads that rhymed. A lot of facets of the blues comes from African culture

The call-and-response aspect of the music came straight from African origins and there were a lot of licks that would get duplicated thrice or more. This later developed into a line repeating twice and then on the third time around there would be an 'answer line'. You will be able to still discover these characteristics of early blues in modern day music, especially hip-hop.

The term 'The Blues' refers to the 'blue devils' which means down spirits or unhappiness.

The blues guitar brings a fundamental role in blues music as well as contemporary music. It has shaped Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass and even heavy rock genres The original blues of the early 1900's, otherwise known as "poor man's blues" was usually linked with hard times, oppressiveness from white folk, ruthlessness of the police, gambling, economic depression, floods, magic, farming and dry periods. This music was fueled by a lot of brokenheartedness and anger. Not uncommonly a lost loved one or an generic harsh environment prompted the lyrics and the tone of the blues guitar.

After the world war, you start to see blues songs that were about relationships and sexuality. Also, wit was broadened to the mix. Here is a funny example:

"That must be your woman, cause mine don't look like that... I said That must be your woman, cause mine don't look like that... Have you seen my baby? She's so big and fat..."

The blues guitar style came forth from the American South's instruments of the time which were the banjo and the Diddley Bow. This was a home made one stringed instrument that was favourite in the early 20th century. Figures such as Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Son House and Blind Willie McTell were a part of the delta blues style which used a lot of finger picking techniques and slide guitar innovations.

Eventually, after WWII 'electric blues' became increasingly popular where the blues guitar was played on electric guitars as were the bass guitars. This was most prevalent in the Chicago area.

The history of blues guitar and poor man's blues is rich with culture and accounts of good times and bad. I could go on for days about the history of the blues guitar but let's make this part 1 so you don't fall asleep on me! - 18424
