The Two Most Common Question When Starting Guitar Lessons

By Tommy Beltrani

In almost two decades as a guitar teacher I had many students and it's interesting to notice that the questions beginners ask are often the same. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few issues. An all time favorite is whether you should start with acoustic or electric guitar lessons and my answer is always the same: "Acoustic guitar lessons!" My reasons are the following:

An acoustic guitar is self sufficient and you don't need an amp, pedals or anything else you will need if you play electric. This is going to save you some cash you could use for a better instrument, some DVDs or online video tutorials.

When you play electric guitar you can get distracted with some advanced techniques, while if you start with acoustic guitar lessons you tend to practice basic techniques like strumming, chords changes and fingerpicking. It's so important to lay down a good foundation and therefore to start with the basics.

Playing pop songs sounds more authentic on acoustic guitar and it will definitely motivate you to play even more just because it sounds so good.

Because there's no need for amplification, an acoustic guitar is much easier to carry around and use wherever you go: camps, school, friends house etc.

Playing chords on an acoustic guitar can be more demanding. This will strengthen your hands muscles which is important if you wish to become a good guitarist. Acoustic is a little bit more work but the benefits you'll gain are absolutely worth it!

Another very common question is: "Should I start with a steel string or a nylon string?". Personally I believe it's all about the sound and style of music you like. It would be nice to actually have them both but if it's not possible go for a nylon string guitar if you like spanish or classical music or you just want a more round sound. While if you play modern styles like blues, country, rock and fingerstyle then buy a steel string.

Once you've been going for a while and you're playing loads of songs then you can move on to electric guitar. Electric is slightly easier to play and you'll be glad you started with acoustic guitar lessons.

Playing a musical instrument is a very enjoyable activity and the effort you put in will soon pay off. Therefore keep on practicing as practice make perfect and at all times have fun in the process. - 18424

Parkway Drive Is In The Fast Lane To Success

By Georg Scheffer

From the laid back, beachfront town of Byron Bay, Australia, this band started in 2003 when they took the name of Parkway Drive, the name of the street where all the late night jam sessions used to took place as they practiced their favorite music.

These 5 hardcore metal men became band mates that were serious about their music and their charisma gave them the uncanny ability to connect with every audience member. They might look like surfer boys, but they are heavy metal musicians that have become great performers.

In August, 2005, they released their first full-length album, "Killing with a Smile" which launched a frantic and rushed series of live performances and tours. Parkway Drive performed as an opening act in Australia and other countries. This allowed them to increase their popularity because of the visibility and they garnered more fans worldwide.

Parkway Drive's current band members

- Front man and vocals done by Winston McCall
- Percussion and Drums played by Ben Gordon
- Guitar played by Jeff Ling
- Guitar played by Luke Kilpatrick
- Bass Guitar played by "Pipey" O'Connor

In June, 2006, American record label, Epitaph Records signed the group and released the album "Killing with a Smile" to American audiences. On the Taste of Chaos Tour they played Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Saosin, which are favorites with the fans and part of their enormous success in the US. Parkway Drive merch enjoyed increased fan demand due to the tour appearances when they performed at the Homebake Festival, Soundwave Festival, Gravity G Festival, and Sound Fest during the August, 2006.

The group enjoyed continued success through 2007 when they played at Underworld, which included the first live performance of "The Siren's Song". When asked to participate in the 2007 US Vans Warped Tour, Parkway Drive was the only Australian band to win the honor. When they released their album, "Horizons" in October, 2007, it scored a 10/10 from Blunt Magazine. Going straight to #6 on the ARIA charts upon its release, the album managed to stay in the top 40 for many weeks. With a sound that resembled Metallica's "Master of Puppets", the "Horizons" album's success was attributable to the US Vans Warped Tour in 2007 and Parkway Drive's exclusive position as the only Australian band on the tour was partly responsible.

The music on the "Horizon's" album is constantly compared to Metallica's own "Master of Puppets". Drive was honored when they were the only Australian group chosen to appear on the US Vans Warped Tour in 2007.Brief Music Highlights Albums Killing with a Smile-2005 Horizons-2007 Music Videos and Singles Smoke 'em if Ya got 'em-2008 Boneyards.

Parkway Drive announced in January of 2009 that Stick to Your Guns andMyChildren MyBride would be part of their headlining a cross-country US tour, which they are still in the middle of. Parkway Drive merchadise sales, including tees, posters and hoodies are popular with fans of one of the newest heavy metal icons. "Idols and Anchors" and "Romance is Dead" are 2 singles that you hear frequently on the radio and a large number of fans are downloading "Carrion" and "Guns for Show, Knives for a Pro". - 18424

Easy Cellphone Customization Ideas

By Russ Black

It seems that the most common thing that people carry with them these days, aside from their keys, is a cellphone. So if you have to have one, and everyone else has one, what do you do to stand out from the crowd? If you're thinking "cellphone customization", you're exactly right. But how do you customize your cellphone? Let me help you out with my top three favorite ways to personalize your cellphone.

The first idea, which is probably not anything new to most of you, is ringtones. Even if you think they are old hat, it might be time to revisit ringtones and find something that makes your cellphone either sing with the choir, or have a solo voice. I'm sure most of you recognize the one default ringtone that comes by default on certain handsets. It's time to get surfing and find a ringtone that will make people around you smile when your phone rings, instead of gritting their teeth wishing for an electromagnetic wave to kill all cellphone ringers forever.

Idea number two is more about the personality that you project just to the people that call you, rather than coming right from your cellphone for you and people around you to hear. What I mean is the ringtone's little brother, the ringback tone. This lets you set up music or sound clips to play for people calling you, as they wait for you to pickup. Instead of just hearing the standard ring beeps, they could be introduced to the latest club tune that you just have to share, or maybe you'd like to play some actual live elevator music just to amuse your friends.

Third on my list of personalizing your phone is to give it a facelift. The most popular models of phones are popular because they have great features and the best reviews. Adding your own faceplate or case lets you distinguish your phone from everyone else with the same model. For one thing, it lets you have some fun with your phone - it's like buying new clothes, you can project an entirely different look just by changing you cellphone skin or faceplate. And even better, you won't mistakenly go home with your friends phone that looks exactly the same as yours.

There are endless ways to customize your mobile accessories, your cellphone is just one of these gadgets that is super easy to personalize. Adding your own character by changing up your ringtones, ringback tones and faceplate or carrying case are easy and not expensive, and will quickly give your cellphone it's own character. Making a statement with your cellphone has never been so fun! - 18424
