The Gibson Guitar Story

By Frank Frederics

Anyone that has just started playing guitar or has been playing for a little (or long) while has probably wanted to have a Gibson guitar if they do not already own one of the many fine models. Over the years, Gibson has made themselves known as a top player in the music and guitar industry and many famous guitarists have been using their guitars exclusively.

Gibson began with their first guitar that they brought out to the world back in 1936, the ES-150. This popular guitar became, at that time, top electric guitars for jazz music for its sound alone. For it's time, it was quite an accomplishment in the music world.

However, it was in 1952 when they released their most well known and popular model, the Les Paul. The first Les Paul solid body electric guitar had a single coil pick up called the P-90 which is part of the reason for the amazing tone that they can produce by a skilled player.

About nine short years later, they came out with another very popular model (best known for being used by AC/DC's guitarist, Angus Young), the SG. Some people say that the SG stood for standard guitar. This guitar has a thinner body than the Les Paul creating a slightly different tone.

After the success of these two guitar releases, Gibson started designing other models which included the Explorer, Flying V, Firebird and others. Just about all of the models of guitars became very successful which says something for the company itself.

With the amount of other guitar companies emerging in the music world, it is amazing to see Gibson staying on the top end of the pack. They have always been committed to making the highest quality instrument that they are able to make. If you do not own one yet, get one or at least try one out! - 18424

More Michael Jackson Books Hit the Shelves

By Jenna Landers

As with most true megastars, Michael Jackson has provided food and drink to authors and leading publishers the world over. In death too, this culture is set to continue, and indeed increase for many years to come, as a host of Michael Jackson books start appearing in bookstores.

For the millions of loyal supporters, UK publisher Harper Collins will become the biggest house to launch its effort. Delivered from concept to print in just 3 weeks, "Michael Jackson - Legend, Hero, Icon", is set to go straight to the top of the bestsellers as it hits UK markets Friday July 17.

With a subtitle of, "A tribute to the King of Pop", the tone of the book is reflective on the successes of Jackson's career as the best entertainer the world has ever witnessed. Mindful that many thousands of fans are still coming to terms with the loss; particularly with the timing just weeks before his "This Is It", tour, this is unsurprising.

Whilst Harper Collins pulled out all the stops to get the book to print, (hiring a freelance author to write 10, 000 words of new material in just 48 hours), it is not the first of new Michael Jackson books made available.

"Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson", written by Ian Halperin was scheduled to go to print on July 30, (again to take advantage of the late singer's comeback tour). A so called "tell all" expos, this clearly aims to satisfy the thirst of less respectful readers.

The delay in printing, said to be out of a mark of respect to the Jackson family, also allowed Halperin to close his book more conclusively than even he could have imagined.

This still is not the first of the latest Michael Jackson books since his death to hit the shelves however, (not publishing until July 14). For that, we need to look to China, where a biography has been on sale since Saturday July 7.

That one of these writers, Jiang Xiaoyu, remains an ardent fan of the star, the book, "Moonwalk in Paradise", is clearly a salute to the brilliance he shone onto the world. However, the authors admit that mistakes may have been made in validity of content; relying very much on personal thoughts, supported by internet based research.

These Michael Jackson books may well be the first to hit the shelves, but there will be more. Whilst the book industry has not been damaged as severely as other industries throughout this recession, this boost to sales will be a welcome shot in the arm. - 18424

How To Clean Cymbals

By Amy Nutt

Are you looking for information on how to clean your cymbals without necessarily making them rust? Are you wondering what solutions to use in cleaning the grime off the cymbals? Then you should read this article. Drummers have different tastes and this is the reason you often find some cymbals looking new and shiny while others look old and used.

These all depend on the choice of the drummers. Some drummers like the cymbal looking used and grimy thus giving the impression that it is often frequently used while others hate to see the cymbals dirty and grimy. The look of a new cymbal often excites people like this and gets them itching for the sticks. The truth is that whether cleaned or not, cymbals give off the same sound although some drummers say when it is not clean, and use over a certain period, it give off a "warm" sound.

Apart from this, some drummers worry that their cymbals will have problems being cleaned. Clean cymbals may sometimes give off better sound. But dirt on some kinds of cymbals are known to help reduce their brash sounds. Each drummer really has his preferences. But, if you do not belong to the group of people who feel that dirty cymbals are the "thing", then here's how to clean the cymbal using different methods:

1. Clean with gentle soaps. Most gentle soaps are far better at cleaning the cymbal than more potent solutions. However, the soaps aren't just enough to clean the cymbals and it isn't advisable to use just about any clean cloth. Cymbal cleaners are preferably the best because of their ability to add some shine to the cymbal making it look new in the process. Cymbal cleaners are easily available at any drums or music equipment shop.

2. Avoid cleaning with water as cymbals made of copper tend to turn green when water is consistently used to clean them. Besides water takes off the shine leaving it exposed to rust and corrosion.

3. A combination of vinegar and lemon can help get rid of all the tar. Lemon has always been known as an astringent and has a lot of cleaning ability. To do this, divide a lemon into 2, squeeze one half onto whole surface of the cymbal and use the other to rub the lemon around. If you have a pot cleaner, apply this and rub on the lemon. This will bring out the shine. You can do this for the 2 surfaces. Then apply the vinegar. If you want to keep the label of the cymbal, avoid applying the vinegar to the point and wash off with warm water. Do not leave to air dry. Dry them properly with cotton materials.

4. If you do not like any of these, why not buy the cymbal brand's cream or liquid. These were produced specifically for the cymbals and work like magic all the time, leaving them clean and looking new. The only downside to this is that it could be a bit pricey. - 18424

The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, as long as virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived structure appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)

Dracula: Farfetched, bewildering story of current time's successor of Dr. Van Helsing (Cushing) fighting lately revitalized vampire (Lee). Cast includes Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Coles, Christopher Neame, and Caroline Munro. (100 minutes, 1992)
