The Beatles Second Record: With The Beatles (1963)

By Harold Donald Quesenberry

1963's With The Beatles is not not the best Beatles studio album, in actuality I think it's likely their worst studio album. That's not to say I do not enjoy listening to this early album in it's new glorious remastered form nor is it to say that this album does not have any great tunes on it because I do and it does.

I do believe that when thinking only about the 8 original songs on the record, it's probably the least inspiring collection of original compositions The Beatles ever released on a record (the very underrated Beatles For Sale has a much better selection of 8 originals) on the other hand, the covers on With The Beatles are quite nice (better than the covers on Beatles For Sale.)

My favorite originals to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs (stereo and mono) are the first three tracks: "It Won't Be Long," "All I've Got To Do," and "All My Loving." Particularly, I've been enjoying song number two, "All I've Got To Do" in mono. It sounds fantastic.

Another original track that has actually been making an impression on me is track #9, "Hold Me Tight." McCartney wrote and sang lead on this one and he's dismissed it as being a "work song". And while I'll agree the song isn't perfect, I think it is a good time.

"Till There Was You" is my favorite cover on the album. It's a very sickly sweet ballad but I think in some strange way it works because of that. The LP's last song, "Money" is a great way to end the album. When I listen closely to the versions of this song included in remastered box sets I realize that the song rocks much harder than I ever realized.

For most of the CDs I do prefer the stereo mixes (particularly with the mid to late 60s albums) when it comes the remastered Beatles box sets but I do think that this CD sounds a bit better in mono. - 18424
