Ten Favorable Suggestions For An Awe-Inspiring Flick To View Tonight

By Kristine Butler

Great motion picture summaries start here. Down to Earth - Homer Croy's continuation to "They had to See Paris" has nouveau riche Midwesterner Rogers setting an end to his family's mindless investing by affirming that he's broke. Not one of Will Roger's best film attempts. Cast includes Can Rogers, Irene Opulent, Dorothy Jordan, and Mary Carlisle. (73 minutes, 1932)

Life on a Strand - Musical, strikingly filmed tale of a blind boy who is informed by his master that his sight can be repaired if he commits his life to music; he gets to be a saintly old gentleman still without sight who voyages from village to village with his young pupil harmonizing songs, which he finds emotionally nurturing. Thoughtful film stuffed with poetic energy, and a soundtrack of extraordinary melodies. Cast includes Liu Zhong Yuan, Huang Lei, Xu Qing, Ma Ling, and Zhang Zhengguan. (110 minutes, 1991)

Richard's Things - Widow Ullmann is seduced by her now deceased husband's lady friend. Screenplay by Frederic Raphael based on his novel. Cast includes Liv Ullmann, Amanda Redman, Tim Smith, Elizabeth Spriggs, and David Markha. (104 minutes, 1980)

In Enemy Country - So-so designer of WW2 enthrall, set in France and England, filmed on a back-lot. Not very persuading. Cast includes Tony Franciosa, Anjanette Comer, Guy Stockwell, Paul Hubschmid, Tom Bell, and Emile Genest. (107 minutes, 1968)

Thunderheart - There have been a number of murders on the Sioux Indian Reservation. The FBI goes in to deal with the circumstances. One agent, Ray Levoi, has Sioux blood. As he investigates the case he soon discovers there is much more going on than some accidental murders.

The Interpreter - U.N. translator Silvia Broome eavesdrops on a death threat made against an African leader. She knows that she was watched and worries for her life. Upon reporting the circumstance to law enforcement, she finds that assistance will not come easy.

Ruby Gentry - Pompous, strolling account of simple-minded Southerner Jones wedding well-off Malden to spite Heston, the man she loves Cast includes Jennifer Jones, Charlton Heston, Karl Malden, and Josephine Hutchinson. (82 minutes, 1952)

Black like Me - Powerful drama based on genuine history of a reporter who took drugs that allowed him to pass for black so he might face racial prejudice first hand. Some features of presentation are un-contemporary, although topics are still relevant. Cast includes James Whitmore, Roscoe Lee Browne, Lenka Petersen, Sorrell Booke, Will Geer, Al Freeman, and Raymond Jacques. (107 minutes, 1964)

Hanky Panky - Blameless designer Wilder is pursued by snoops, cops, etc. Unsurprising, hardly preposterous comedy-thriller, with Radner miscast as the love interest. The movie was meant to be a follow-up to Stir Crazy, although Richard Pryor's part was changed for Gilda. You have seen it all before, and more superior. Cast includes Gene Wilder, Gilda Radner, Kathleen Quinlan, Richard Widmark, Robert Prosky, Josef Sommer, and Johnny Sekka. (88 minutes, 1982)

10,000 B.C. - Warlords have attacked a small mountain tribe in ancient times. They have captured the picturesque Evolet. D'Leh, who loves Evolet, leads a small party of men ready to go the ends of the Earth to rescue Evolet. - 18424
