Melodies contain "Hello, Young Lovers," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance." Barry Lyndon: This film is an attractive, methodically detailed period piece with megastar O'Neal as Thackeray's'th-century Irish rogue idol who desires prosperity however lets it go to his head. The film is long, intentionally slow although on no account uninteresting. Cast includes Patrick Magee, Hardy Kruger, Steven Berkoff, Gay Hamilton, Murray Melvin, Frank Middlernass, and Andre Morell. The Little Thief: So-so personality picture of the title lass, a disassociated, amoral adolescent floating through life in postwar France. Rambo: Much better than part II, this one continues to be firmly footed in the genre of mindless action films, as our brawny idol goes behind Russian battle lines in Afghanistan to save his buddy from a prison fortress. A Scandal in Paris: A fashionable 8th century tale based on the recollections of the infamous Frenchman Eugene Vidocq, whose life of crime comes to a crossroads while he confronts a youthful lady who cherishes him. The clever script was tailor-made for Sanders. Cast includes George Sanders, Carole Landis, Akim Tarniroff, Signe Hasso, Gene Lockhart, Alan Napier, and Alma Kruger. (106 minutes,'46)
Marie Antoinette: This film is a visually sumptuous account of an adolescent's voyage from Vienna to the Palace at Versailles and the throne of France. Author-director Coppola's Marie (as played by Dunst) is a modern-day gal, with contemporary music set contrary to the pomp and circumstance of the'th century life. Starts to tire eventually and ends with a cry, not a smash although there's much to like here. Cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Tear Tom, Steve Coogan, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, Molly Shannon, Shirley Henderson, Danny Huston, Marianne Faithfull, Mary Nighy, and Sarah Adler. Rhapsody in August: Average (by his own estimations) little Kurosawa is a piece in reference to the hurtful memories of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn't appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady's lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima.
