Singing Tips You Must Not Be Without

By Brian Styden

I personally cannot think of a better way to give yourself to others then through singing. You use your voice to convey, express, share and just about everything. But allowing personality to shine through the art of singing is incredible. Be aware that this does take patience and time. Your voice is your instrument. So let's go over some singing tips.

I honestly believe that anyone can sing. While there are a few who are truly blessed with a natural gift and ability, anyone can with practice and exercises, work their voice into an exquisite instrument. You must practice your singing like you would any other skill.

You need to take care of and work out your vocals like any other muscle you would want stronger. That being said we also need to loosen up, stretch and cool down your voice after extended use.

The easiest and most perfect exercise to limber up or cool down is to lightly hum. You should do hums regularly. The buzzing thoroughly warms up the chords nicely and gets them lubricated. Now I know I don't need to teach you how to hum but there is a correct way. Soft and comfortable with an M sound or even N hum. There should never be any stress or tightness in your throat or neck. Our goal is a gentle and easy hum.

Next we will practice these hums with actual scales going in both directions up and down. If you get too high and your buzz cracks, pause. Don't look to push it up there. Just go back down the scale easy and smooth. Great singers do not push, we should never force a note out. There is no need to tense up your neck or throat. Remember it will take time to develop your voice.

So how can we sing without tension? Well with proper breath support. Breathing is a very important part of the process. You really need to learn about your diaphragm and how to breath from it. This is the muscle that regulates breathing. When the diaphragm gets confused the worst feeling in the world starts, hiccups.

I know this may sound strange but pant like a dog for a few seconds. Try that or use the "hut hut" like a quarterback. If you do this accurately you should feel the pressure from just under your ribs. Sometimes you hear people say "sing from your belly" this is what they actually mean. It will take time and exercise to get this diaphragm muscle functioning in sync with our voice but when it does, watch out.

Lastly remember to cool your voice down; again you can do this with hums. Taking care of your voice is a constant job. You need to keep an eye on what you eat. Milk, french fries, or spicy tacos (all my favorites) are bad for your voice. Even our daily volume when speaking should be under control as we do not want to lose our voice and damage our chords.

As with anything in life singing takes devotion, work, and time. It becomes a twenty four hour job that requires a special diet and practice. None of this matters when you start to hear the pay off. There is nothing quite like singing your feelings out loud for all to hear! There is no way to go over everything one requires to develop into a great singer in one article but I hope these singing tips help you on your way. - 18424
