Some Quick Motion Picture Synopses

By Myra Espinoza

Until recently, if you wanted to watch a movie, a trip to a video store like blockbuster was your only option. These days you can stay at home and get movies from a movie download site. You will find just about any movie you want with a good movie download site, below is a small sample.

Barnyard: Excited zaniness set on a farm where, after sundown, the animals turn the barn into a loud nightclub. James is Otis, a young cow who is very mature, much to the chagrin of his dad, Ben Elliott, who keeps watch for preying coyotes when the others party. Irrera stands out as Duke the Mutt. Cast includes Courtney Cox, Sam Elliott, Danny Glover, Wanda Sykes, Andie MacDowell, David Koechner, and Laraine Newman. (90 minutes, 2006)

Ricochet: Nick Styles is now the assistant DA of Los Angeles. Years ago, as a rookie cop, he helped put master criminal Earl Talbot Blake behind bars. Now Blake has escaped from prison. He has only one thing on his mind, revenge.

Alakazam the Great: Japanese-made animation is excellent for entertaining the kids. The tale hubs on a supernatural baboon's ambitious ventures, from a bullfight in the pit of a volcano to a mythical battle with Hercules. Cast includes Frankie Avalon, Arnold Stang, and Sterling Holloway. (84 minutes, 1961)

Buffalo Soldiers: In 1989, the peacetime U.S. Army stationed in Germany is largely manned by men who had an option of penitentiary or time in the service. One of them (Phoenix) is a salesperson who wheels and deals, Bilko-like, under the nose of his naive commander (Harris) till a new top sergeant shows up (Glenn) who's decided to clean things up. Cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Ed Harris, Scott Glenn, Anna Paquin, Elizabeth McGovern, Michael Pena, Leon Robinson, Gabriel Mann, and Dean Stockwell. (98 minutes, 2003)

A Good Woman: Another rendition of Oscar Wilde's Woman Windermere's Fan which was filmed a few times over the years. This time it is set in Italy instead of England and updated from the 1890s to the 1930s. A number of Wilde's British characters now are Americans; one of them is Mrs. Erlynne a sorely miscast Seek, a bankrupt adventuress who shows up in Amalfi and decides to seduce very wealthy, recently wedded Robert Windermere Umbers. Cast includes Helen Seek, Scarlett Johansson, Milena Vukotic, Stephen Campbell Moore, Mark Umbers, Tom Wilkinson, and Diana Hardcastle. (93 minutes, 2005)

Navy Seals: Navy Seals go into the Mid-East to rescue captured US pilots. During this successful rescue, the Seals observe that the enemy terrorist have Stinger missiles in their possession. With no time to destroy the missiles, they leave them behind and complete the rescue mission. We need to recover these weapons before terrorists have the chance to use them.

Marjorie Morningstar: Wood is only satisfactory as Herman Wouk's heroine in this story of a N.Y.C. gal striving for greatness although ending up a suburban housewife, with Kelly being her summer romance. Cast includes Gene Kelly, Natalie Wood, Claire Trevor, Ed Wynn, Everett Sloane, Carolyn Jones, Martin Milner, Martin Balsam, and Ruta Lee. (123 minutes, 1958)

Illuminata: Life, love, lust, and aspiration in a theatrical troupe in the beginning of the 2Oth century N.Y.C., although the feel is uniquely European. Playwright Turturro is in love with the corporation's megastar/supervisor, and longs to have her act his latest play. Cast includes Jolm Turturro, Katherine Borowitz, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Rufus Sewell, Beverly D'Angelo, and Donal McCann. (111 minutes, 1999)

Dementia Thirteen: Gory terror film set before the operation that changed her life. One of the more unique yet strange romantic comedies of our time. The film is kept on target by the quality acting of Mackintosh, who pulls off a difficult role. Cast includes William Campbell, Luana Anders, Bart Patton, Mary Mitchel, and Patrick Magee. (81 minutes, 1963)
