Learning to be Musically Literate

By Victor King

There are not many online lessons on how to sight read music. Have you found any? The ones that are there usually try the subject logic approach. Do you know the difference between the subject logic approach and the developmental / sequential approach? It is as if no one even knows about how to teach developmentally or sequentially.

Would it not be grand if we had someone who could not just to tell us how, but instead, would teach us how by doing it with us. We need someone who can communicate small attainable objectives. Maybe if we could hear examples and sing with the example then we could learn.

Can you only sing the melody? What if you are an alto, tenor or bass? Good vocal training is training that helps us to sing a part in harmony that is with other parts like the melody or in canon or with a melodic ostinato. Amazingly enough, in order for one to sing intervals accurately, one must hear harmonically, but this does not mean that we need to practice dry interval dictation.

If we the choir members could actually sight sing our parts, we would not need to have sectionals. If we could sight sing our parts we would not need the director to play it on the piano or sing it for us. How much time do you think that would save?

Moreover, if the choir director actually had the skill to sing it for us that might save some time and be somewhat better because a voice is better support for the voice than a piano. However, even this should not be necessary if choir members can sight sing. In one sense, the piano is quicker but in reality, it is much slower than if everyone knew how to sing on sight. So taking the time to learn would be worth it in the end.

If we are going to learn, then we have to set aside a time each day to discover something new about music and to review previous musical elements. What we need is someone that teaches in the lesson and not one that says, "Take it home and learn it." Each lesson should build on the preceding one.

When we need to learn new elements, we can revisit some of the familiar songs that we learned earlier or we can learn new songs. Everyone can learn to sing in the same way that we learned to talk. The whole process in a capsule is to hear first, then sing, then understand, then read, then write and finally create!

I hope no one has ever told you that you cannot sing, because it just is not true. I hope the choir leader has never asked you to stop sing. How could they know more than God, who commands us to sing! It really is just a matter of learning to control our own spirit and voice.

Everyone who is willing to work at it can learn to sight sing. All instrumentalists should learn to sight sing before they ever pick up and instrument. Even the blind and the deaf can sing! Online sight singing lessons are possible and everybody can learn to sing over the internet. All you need to do is involve yourself, participate! How essential is music to you? If you are a teacher who wants to teach music successfully - you can! If you are a student who wants to learn music to sight sing, be musically literate and sing beautifully - you can. - 18424
