An Accepted American Writer's Works That Were Turned Into Films

By Norman L Ellis

Since 1989, John Grisham has been a preferred American writer. Focusing regularly on legal fiction, his books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. At the point of this writing, he has authored 17 legal fiction books with a further projected for November 2009, 4 non-legal fiction books and one non-fiction book. There have been 10 films made from his writings, with one in the works.

The first motion picture from one of his books was "The Firm" in 1993. Tom Cruise plays a Harvard law school graduate who begins working for a Memphis law firm with links to the underworld. Also starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman. Again in 1993, the 2nd motion picture from a Grisham book came out. "The Pelican Brief" starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

"The Client" starring the late Brad Renfro, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones was released in 1994. This movie follows the course of a adolescent boy who by mistake witnesses a suicide and is as a result pursued by the mafia for information they suppose he learned from the dying man.

Grisham's very first novel, and some may say his greatest story, was "A Time To Kill". This story was made into a motion picture in 1996 and it introduced an up and coming new actor in the lead character, Matthew McConaughey. It also starred Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Also from the year 1996 was "The Chamber" starring Chris O'Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway.

In 1997, "The Rainmaker" starring Matt Damon as a rookie attorney who takes on the suit of a boy turned down for medical treatment by a influential insurance corporation. In 1998, the only picture from Grisham that was based upon an unpublished manuscript was released, "The Gingerbread Man" starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr.

2 of Grisham's non-legal fiction books have been made into movies, "A Painted House" in 2003 and "Christmas with the Kranks", starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, which is based upon the book "Skipping Christmas".

In 2003, "The Runaway Jury" came out, starring Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. "The Associate", which was just released in January 2009, is planned to be a movie release in the year 2012.

John Grisham has been one of the most accepted and fertile authors in recent history, with 22 writings and one more being released in November 2009, 10 films and an additional in 2012.
