Airplane: Extremely ludicrous spoof of Airport-type with a continuous amount of gags that keeps up almost to the end. Our top choice: the bizarre plight of Lt. Hurwitz. Stay tuned through the very last credits. Cast includes Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Robert Pile, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Leslie Nielsen, Loma Patterson, and Stephen Stucker. (100 minutes, 1984)
300: 300 tells the epic tale of the Battle of Thempylae. The Persians have come by the thousands to take over Greece. When asked to simply give up, and receive power and riches, the Spartan leader refuses the offer. Instead, he and 300 of his best men stood against the whole of Xerxes army, and kill thousands before finally being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the attackers.
Lease A Cop: Chicago cop Reynolds is delayed after his botched hotel medication bust leaves half twelve lifeless. An eyewitness hooker helps him track down the bullet-happy slaughterers. Burt appears strained but is eager to work with the hooker. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, James Remar, Richard Masur, Dionne Warwick, Bemie Casey, Robby Benson, and Michael Rooker. (96 minutes, 1988)
Slate: Strolling tirade of brothers Burke and Sacks, who pillage a bank, slaughter a cop and abduct Thornton, who witnesses their offense. Conceivably captivating story falls flat after 20 seconds. Cast includes Sigrid Thornton, Simon Burke, Martin Sacks, Tommy Lewis, and Lesley Baker. (90 minutes, 1987)
Cry the Beloved Country: Easy going back country pastor voyages to Johannesburg looking for his child, when destiny links his road with that of a prosperous, bigoted white landowner. This heart rending tale journals the racial divisiveness at its roots in South Africa, without resorting to preaching. Cast includes Canada Lee, Charles Carson, Sidney Poitier, Geoffrey Eager, Reginald Ngeabo, and Joyce Carey. (111 minutes, 1951)
Manny and Lo: An orphaned 11 year old Manny Jahanssan and her more ignorant sixteen-year-old sis La palladina rest in model homes and drive an old station wagon. Lo is pregnant, so they abduct prissy Place to help with the delivery when hiding out in a woodsy lodge. Prudent, hot comedy-tirade is crisp and spontaneous; a notable debut for author-director Krueger. Cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Aieksa Palladina, Mary Kay Place, Paul Guilfayle, Glenn Fitzgerald, and Novella Nelson. (97 minutes, 1996)
From the Hip: Once more, Nelson plays a personality only a mommy might love: a barrister who's made a name for himself by winning a miserable case through shocking courtroom strategies. Now he's given a new challenge: guarding 'Hurt' who's implicated of slaughter. Hurts elaborate behavior couldn't spare this mongrel of a film. Cast includes Judd Nelson, Elizabeth Perkins, John Hurt, Darren McGavin, Ray Walston, Dan Monahan, Allan Arbus, and Edward Fall. (112 minutes, 1987)
Everest: Astonishing images of climbing Mount Everest. An IMAX crew ascends the peak in May of 1996. The IMAX team succeeded, but eight climbers from other teams died. The IMAX team assisted in rescues before finishing their ascent.
Dan in Real Life: Friendly comedy-drama of newspaper columnist Dan (Carell), the doting although harried single dad of 3 baby girls. While the family heads off to the Northeast for a holy day at his parents' seaside home, this widowed dad impulsively meets somebody (Binoche) who appears to be exact for him. The family reunion is replete with family member rivalries, secrets, and resentments. This film manages to ascend above recognizable sitcom level to be an amusing take on middle-aged affairs of the heart. Cast includes Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Chef, Dianne West, John Mahoney, Alison Pill, Emily Obtuse, Amy Ryan, Norbert Leo Butz, and Jessica Hecht. (98 minutes, 2007)
