The History Of Classical Music

By Corey Sanders

Many forms of musical compositions were created either for the church or in relation to it. Monodic Gregorian chants and plain songs first written having 2 or 3 lines during this time, therefore we can say that it was in this time that harmony has first been shown in musical writings and that these were the earliest types of classical music.

During the Renaissance, musicians were still only dedicated to choral type music. However, musicians have already started creating different textural variety and differences during this period. If you hear some music from the 15th century, you may recognize a bit of vocal works, subtle, but without the words.

Gradually, people have developed what you could call the normal feel of classical music. Composers started to steer away from the modal system of harmony which had been predominant for more than 300 years. They started to work towards the organization of their compositions into major and minor scales. This, in turn, imparted the strong sensation of each composition having what we now recognize as a key.

Classical music eventually was found in the middle of a gold period during the latter half of the 16th century as many capella masses, anthems, psalms, motets, and madrigals were written by the masters of this era.

Furthermore, it was during this time that instrumental music came into its own for the very first time. Keyboard music that distinguished fantasias, dance movements, and variations came into being and have been evolving ever since. - 18424
