Australian Outback Hats Capture the Spirit of the Land Down Under

By Malcom Sloan

The Australian Outback Hat, often called the Australian version of the American Cowboy hat, was developed in basically the same way. Australians in earlier times also needed something to cover their head during the really hot weather and to keep the rain off of them. This is where the similarity stops though.

The Aussie Outback hat is smaller with sloping front and back brims. The sides are not turned up as much. Aussie hats come in many different materials, including fur felt, straw, canvas, leather, wool felt, kangaroo, even mesh. The Aussie Outback hat is a lot like the American Cowboy hat in that it really is illustrative of Australian life. It's design and use are suited to the Australian climate.

Almost everyone who lives in the Australian Outback has more than one hat. Each hat has a different use besides the usual use of covering the head in harsh climates. Throughout the world, this headgear is perceived as both a practical and a design choice.

Many people mistakenly think that Australians will hang trinkets from the brims of these Australian Outback hats such as crocodile teeth and other items. Tourists are the only ones who would wear these. Fedora hats are only worn when one needs a safari hat. Traditionally it's a fedora with the brim completely pushed down.

Numerous styles of Australian Outback hats exist. This kind of hat is like the American Cowboy hat, only smaller. Akubra Hats are the original kind of Outback hat. The Keir family began manufacturing these hats in 1874, and they are still at it today. The higher quality hats are made of wild rabbit fur. The "snowy river" hat is the most popular Akubra hat. The name is from the movie "The Man from Snowy River."

Barma-These hats are ?squashable?, an Australian term for the ability to fold up the hat in a very small space only to have it spring back into shape. This is due to the particularly high quality of certain leathers that the manufacturers will only use in order to have a consistent product. Jacaru-One of the first manufacturers in Australia of the leather hat style. They also have a canvas style and both are very rugged and look even better as they age.

Bill Conner's steer hide hat prompted him to create the first leather hat business, BC Hats. This company also produces a unique kind of hat with wire mesh built into the brim. This hat is easy to shape and holds its shape well. Many people recognize the "Aussie hat" as a Stockman. The most cliched Australian hat is the Cork. There are corks strung onto its brim so flying insects will be repelled. The constant movement of the corks is said to protect the wearer from tiresome, flying pests.

As you can see, the Australian Outback Hat has many versions and the best way to get the full effect of each hat is to go to www.hats-forsale.com to view each hat to see which one you would like to have. Who knows, you just may be the next Crocodile Dundee! - 18424
